The Center for Media and Citizenship’s Executive Director, Robertson Professor of Media Studies, Author, and Cultural Historian Siva Vaidhyanthan joins Coy to explore a new documentary film “Starving the Beast.” Vaidhyanathan was interviewed for the film and is featured throughout.

“Starving the Beast examines the on-going power struggle on college campuses across the nation as political and market-oriented forces push to disrupt and reform America’s public universities. The film documents a philosophical shift that seeks to reframe public higher education as a ‘value proposition’ to be borne by the beneficiary of a college degree rather than as a ‘public good’ for society. Financial winners and losers emerge in a struggle poised to profoundly change public higher education. The film focuses on dramas playing out at the University of Wisconsin, University of Virginia, University of North Carolina, Louisiana State University, University of Texas and Texas A&M.” celebrates the premiere of its all-new Coy Barefoot Program with an exclusive, extended interview with Terry McAuliffe, the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Award-winning journalist and best-selling author Coy Barefoot talks with the Governor about a host of topics— including the Governor’s recent legislative proposals to improve public education in Virginia; his efforts to revamp the state’s juvenile justice system; gun regulations and the impact of NRA lobbying in the General Assembly; economic development; the future of the Port of Virginia; the Governor’s recent visit to Cuba; the international role of the University of Virginia in the 21st century; and much more, including a candid conversation about political corruption in our political system.

"Thomas Jefferson knew what schools were for — to ensure that citizens would know when and how to protect their liberty. It would not have come easily to the mind of such a man, as it does to political leaders today, that the young should be taught to read exclusively for the purpose of increasing their economic productivity." — Media scholar Neil Postman
